Der aus den Harry Potter Romanen bekannte Sport „Quidditch“ hat eine erstaunliche Wandlung durchlebt: Seit 2004 als „Muggel-Quidditch“ oder „Quidditch“ bezeichnet, wurde der Sport von Jahr zu Jahr mit jedem neuen Regelwerk professioneller und distanzierte sich immer mehr von seinen literarischen Wurzeln. Im Juli 2022 hat schließlich die International Quadball Association (IQA) die Umbenennung des Sportes in Quadball verkündet. Diese Umbenennung richtet den Sport gleichzeig neu aus:
In den letzten Jahren hat sich Quadball zu einer etablierten Sportart entwickelt und gewinnt weltweit an
Beliebtheit. Der neue Name „Quadball“ signalisiert eine Abgrenzung zur fiktiven Welt von Harry Potter und
verdeutlicht, dass Quadball als eigenständige Sportart existiert. Die Umbenennung soll somit den Sport für die
Menschen interessant machen, die zuvor von der Verbindung zur Romanvorlage abgeschreckt wurden.
Darüber hinaus ist der Begriff „Quidditch“ markenrechtlich geschützt und darf somit nicht im kommerziellen
Rahmen genutzt werden. Dies erschwert die Suche nach Sponsoren für Teams und Turniere und damit auch eine
Weiterentwicklung des Sportes.
Die Debatte um die transphobe Haltung von J.K. Rowling, der Schöpferin von Harry Potter, wirft einen Schatten
auf die Wahrnehmung von Quidditch und seiner Entwicklung. Rowling ist in der Vergangenheit wiederholt durch
transfeindliche Äußerungen aufgefallen.
Als Team, als deutsche Quadball-Community und als Sport wollen wir uns klar gegen solche Ansichten distanzieren!
Die Namensänderung zu Quadball ist daher für uns ein wichtiges Zeichen.

The debate surrounding the transphobic stance of J.K. Rowling, the creator of Harry Potter, casts a shadow over the perception of Quidditch and its development. Rowling has repeatedly attracted attention for transphobic statements in the past. As a team, as a German quadball community and as a sport, we want to clearly distance ourselves from such views! The name change to Quadball is therefore an important sign for us.
